The Journey to the New World ... On September 13, 1513, Balboa and his men landed on the Eastern shore of the Pacific Ocean. After traveling for more then 68 miles they reached a bay. Because they arrived on September 29, the feast day of the archangel Saint Michael, they named the bay San Miguel. They also voyaged through the jungles, of what is now Panama. He claimed the Pacific Ocean and all its shores for Spain. This was one of his most important and recognized discoveries. As Vasco Balboa made history, his legacy continues in our world today. ![]() |
